| so i recently watched a korean movie called old boy and its about incest and revenge. but the way the movie ended, i've come to think that it might be even more about incest because the question posed to us was even if you knew, could you still love (your family member) in that way? and so the movie ends there.
anyway, before i share with you why i think the movie stinks, i will tell you some of the reasons other people thought it stunk; however i don't agree with them. so the biggest reason why most people don't like this movie is because of the incest and how in contrast to our cultural standards, it is disturbing. although i think incest is bad, it isn't a good reason to poo poo a movie. any movie has a right to show wutever it is going to show. in fact, the story from the movie wasn't that bad; it has a great intro and sets things up nicely. but it is up to the director to do a good job in illustrating the movie on film. basically, given a story, wutever it is, you have to work with wutever you get, may it be incest or mystery or religion. therefore i won't go down that road and poo poo the story, because the story is innovatively different. i'm saying this because i want to validate my reasons for not liking it. i mean anyone can just say, i didn't like it because i hate the story. that's just an opinion. however, i try to give reasons that surpass opinions, reasons that are based on elements of what makes a movie good.
now the reason why i don't like the movie is because the director didn't do a good job in keeping the story focused. at first the drive of the movie was revenge because the guy is kidnapped for 15 years, and during that time his wife is brutally murdered and child raised by strangers. then more gets added into the mix with the introduction of supporting characters and the villain. I must point this out that introducing the villain early on was a flaw because they kept him hidden so long in suspense, to show his face and actively have him in the view is anti-climatic.
yet another thing gets added by the revealing of incest that was going on that caused the whole mattered. and again, i think this was made to shock us but it was revealed to the audience as a matter of fact that this too was anti-climatic. its kinda like how murder mysteries try to hold you in suspense but yet they end up telling you certain things all at once which kinda ruins it. but not only that, the old boy movie gave away obvious hints that something really odd like incest was going on. too obvious, almost insulting.
so because of this, it loses its original drive, which was revenge, and its original suspense of "who's the villain?" with this we become somewhat "lost" in the film with no where to drive. i kept saying to myself, 'annd?? what's next? what's the point?'
thre was nothing cataclysmic about any of its intended climaxes. so to reiterate, it sucks because they just tell it to me straight up without anything creative. like a soap opera when they suddenly announce someone is gay, or so-and-so is actually alive. everything is reveal at once without any creativity.
a friend who was watching the movie pointed it out that its something like count de monte cristo (and in fact the movie old boy mentions count de monte cristo). however the big big big huge difference was that even though we knew almost everything, that the guy in count de monte cristo wanted revenge for such a long long time, at least the movie was focused in that sense and it kept driving the movie in suspense, building to a climax all because we wanted to know if he ever will get his revenge?
again, the focus in old boy got side tracked and thus almost everything from that point on became anti-climatic. this explains why the ending was dragged on for so long too. i think the writers or the director didn't know how to end it. they wanted to end their many focuses, the last being about incest and that even if one knew of incest, would it matter, or could one live with the fact in the face of love?
now i must be clear about the many focuses. i'm not saying that having too many things going on in a film is bad. some times complexity is good. however, the director did a poor job in managing these plot lines. good movies usually are able to end and resolve all of their climaxes at about the same time, so that the ending somehow "works" out. this is also a reason why old boy sucks, because they didn't do this, which is also why the ending sucks.
what could they have done? change up some of the story line, that is, swap some things up, delete things that don't drive the plot, add thigns that might make the movie more compelling. it would've been great to have kept the bad guy hidden until the end of the movie, the big climax, which would thereby answer most, if not all our questions through the thrilling, suspense film. all the while the guy is trying to figure out wut is going on, why he got kidnapped and his family killed, and who is behind it all.
now let me give reasons why someone might like the movie: i think that the reasons why people like this movie are because it is differnt in its story compared to any other movie, the action, the gore, the sex, and the possible fact that the people who like it like to know everything at once, yet it is enough for them to be "climaxed". such a need to know the movie story line shows that the person needs to be secure before moving on. another reason is that the fact it is different, people can take pride in it being differnt and proceed to be "cool" because it is different. having pride in such clicheic elements that are known to be cool isn't and won't make anyone cool. elements such as the element of innovation, that is something new or differnt (ie incest), the element of choreographed fighting (which some of them were pretty cool), the element of gore, sex..blah blah blah.
anyway, the movie sucks, don't waste your time. i wish i was able to get my 2 hrs back. sucks for me.
if you want to watch a great movie, watch the movie called Usual Suspects, starring kevin spacey. it is a great film, wonderful story, and even if i told there is something unexpected in there, nothing will ever prepared you for it. now that's a great film!
last thing: now see a great film is able to wow you even if someone tells you its good or some other crap that might otherwise spoil it. there i'm done.
| so i recently got back into watching naruto which implies i haven't been watching some period of time. the for my lack of attention is due to the fact that naruto has been showing horrible filler episodes. this means that the anime caught up with the story in the manga. and so the anime stalls time by showing filler episodes that more or less keeps from developing the main storyline. this allows the manga to continue on with the main storyline so that the anime can later on, when there is sufficient enough storyline written, switch back to the main storyline.
does that make sense?
anyway, my essential point leading up to here is that the last filler episodes were pretty good. =)
what i hope happens later on is a love triangle with naruto, hinata, and sakura. maybe the way they'll set this up is have sakura still pursue sasuke only to have her heart broken, leaving her confused, thereby (maybe a lil confusion or realization) having her feelings for naruto develop.
well at this point naruto of course is gonna be there for sakura, cuz they're long time friends. all the awhile, hinata has always had feelings for naruto. the twist will be when naruto realizes hinata's feelings and decides to love her back, but also can't turn away from sakura because she's hurt and is his long time friend (and childhood crush).
what my hope is that naruto and hinata will get together because sakura has always looked down on and turned naruto. for all you girls out there, thats a bad thing to do to guys. even if you do that to someone you don't like, the person you might like might see that and might possibly (if he has any good qualities at all) be turned off by it. so girls don't be jerks. same goes to the guys too!
so anyway....and hinata has always loved naruto. so in that aspect, i hope naruto sees that he's got something good going there and not miss it. and in regards to sakura, i hope she sees the good person she missed out on and learns from it. as for hinata, i hope she learns to not be shy but to find that when it comes to love one must seize it, embrace it, and take full advantage of it in showing it because you never know if it'll be too late.
